Follow the development of Melbourne from 1835 to today through portraits of the city itself: from early colonial sketches and the bustling frontier scenes of the Impressionists, to the women’s art of the early war years and the shock of Albert Tucker’s visions of Melbourne in 1943.
Experimentation and nostalgia rise simultaneously in the ‘50s and ‘60s as Australia’s greatest artists paint the city. Blackman, Amor, Smart, Arkley and others consolidate the collection as the city proves itself to be the crucible of Australian Art and today’s contemporary artists continue to add dimension to Melbourne’s visage in new and exciting ways.
