BIG Summer Read
Between 1 December and 31 January, Glen Eira Libraries invites young readers and their families to take part in the BIG Summer Read, a fun and rewarding challenge designed to keep young minds active and engaged over the summer holidays.
Why the BIG Summer read matters
Research shows that children tend to read less over the summer holiday break, often resulting in a loss of literacy skills built throughout the year. This is a phenomenon known as the "summer slide."
Public libraries, including Glen Eira Libraries, play a big part in addressing the summer slide by providing free access to books, resources, and engaging programs to keep young people reading and engaged.
How it works
The BIG Summer Read is open to all young people aged 0-18, including independent and non-independent readers. Children can log books they:
- Read themselves.
- Have read to them by parents or caregivers.
- Listen to as eAudiobooks.
Participants just need to read and log at least 10 books during the challenge to go into the draw for incredible prizes. Participation is free, and registration is easy via readbooks.com.au/bsr. Earn digital badges along the way and track your progress in a fun and interactive way!
Exciting prizes up for grabs
Glen Eira Libraries is offering a fantastic range of local prizes, including:
- Ages 0-5: 3 x $50 book packs.
- Ages 6-10: Luna Park Family Pass and $50 LEGO voucher.
- Ages 11-14: Nintendo Switch and $50 LEGO voucher.
- Ages 15-18: Virtual Reality Meta Headset and JBL Portable Speaker.
Plus, all participants are automatically entered into a statewide prize draw for even more chances to win!
