Indigenous Australia, Learning languages and literacy
Ara Irititja is an award winning project that records and repatriates multimedia cultural and language material back to Aboriginal people in remote Central Australia. The project was a community initiative and has been running since 1994. In 2016 Ara Irititja received an Indigenous Languages and Arts grant from the Commonwealth Government to create an app that integrates with material from the archive. The app, called Ara Winki No 1, is a multilingual educational tool for Aboriginal youth to access their culture, history and language. It is an introduction for them to the Ara Irititja project. It is also a general introduction to Ara Irititja and Aboriginal life in Central Australia for the broader Australian public. The app is divided into five sections - Bush Foods, Art and Craft, Land Rights, Land Care and Learning. Download the app from the App Store and Google Play.
