Library hours and FAQs

Our priority remains the safety of our community and staff, and we’re continuing to follow the Victorian Government’s guidelines around gathering limits, social distancing and hygiene measures. Wait times may be expected. If you are not already a member, please join online and bring your ID with you when you visit to receive your library card.

NO BOOKINGS ARE REQUIRED TO VISIT A LIBRARY AND BORROW.

Our temporary opening hours are:
  • Mondays to Fridays: 10am-6pm (Elsternwick Library closed Mondays)
  • Closed Saturdays
  • Sundays: 12pm-5pm
  • (All libraries will be closed on Australia Day, Tuesday 26 January).

    You will be met by our concierge staff at the library entrance who will direct you. To enter the library, you will need to scan a QR code and enter your name and contact details for contact tracing. If you do not have a smartphone, staff will assist you to register.

    At the library, you are required to wear a face mask, use hand sanitiser upon entry, practice social distancing, and be courteous to staff and other visitors. (Children under 12 years are not required to wear a face mask).

    What you can do in our libraries:
  • browse and borrow (newspapers not available)
  • use study spaces (limited number available)
  • book a computer (limited number of computers and limited assistance available)
  • printing, photocopying and scanning
  • access wi-fi
  • access the catalogue
  • return your items through the outside return chutes (no late fees for overdue items at this time).
  • Are the libraries open?

    Yes, our current hours at all libraries are: 

    • Mondays to Fridays: 10am-6pm (Elsternwick Library closed Mondays)
    • Saturdays: Closed
    • Sundays: 12pm-5pm

    (All libraries will be closed on Australia Day, Tuesday 26 January).

    There’s no time limit on your stay but keeping it to a minimum will allow other visitors to come in and use the library. Wait times may be expected. 

    What do I do when I arrive?

    You will be met by our concierge staff who will direct you. You will need to scan a QR code and enter your name and contact details for contact tracing. If you do not have a smartphone, staff will assist you to register.

    All visitors over the age of 12 must wear a face mask while at the library. Please use hand sanitiser upon entry, practice social distancing, and be courteous to staff and other visitors.   

     Are the returns chutes open?

    Yes, the chutes are open 24 hours a day. No late fees will be charged. 

    How many books and other items can I borrow? 

    You can borrow up to 40 items per membership (limit of two games) for 21 days. A maximum of five reservations per membership applies.

    In addition, you can borrow our free e-books, movies, digital magazines, e-audio books and e-newspapers — available online 24/7.

    How do I reserve items?

    To look for a title in our catalogue to reserve, go to Search the catalogue, then place your reservation. You will need to login with your membership number (starting with 23162 or C) and password to reserve items. A  maximum of five reservations per membership at a time applies. 

    If we do not have a book title you are interested in, please make a suggestion here and we will do our best to add it to our collection.  

    Are computers, printers and study spaces available to use?

    Yes, but due to restrictions regarding the number of visitors and social distancing, the number of computers and study spaces are limited. Printers and photocopiers are available for self-service.  

    Bookings are required to use our computers. Sanitising of the computers and equipment will be conducted by staff between each booking. Please be patient and maintain distancing while this is being done. 

    Are the e-waste stations open?

    Yes, they are open during library hours for you to drop off your e-recycling.

    Will I be charged late fees?

    No, late fees will not be charged during this stage. In any case, if you are self-isolating or unable to leave your home because you or a family member is unwell, any late fees you incur will be waived.

    Are you still running events?

    Yes, we sure are, they're just online! Head to our Events Calendar to check out our live online events coming up! Programs including BabyTime and StoryTime will not return to the libraries until some time in 2021.

    Have you got any recorded content like StoryTimes or workshops available?

    Absolutely! Head to Library@Home to see pre-recorded workshops and activities including StoryTimes and BabyTimes, craft for kids and adults, history research or mindfulness activities, yoga, recipe walk-throughs with cookbook authors, slime making, juggling, journaling and more!
